Marine Science Videos for Kids

A collection of online videos, from all over the internet, might be of interest. These aren’t my own videos. However, I’ve listed them in the order of the sections of Workbook 1, in case you’d like to watch them around the same time.

General

Starting with some light entertainment, BBC’s The Deep

Unit 1 Oceanography

One Big Ocean

Learn Bright’s Oceans of the World

Ocean Features

The scientist who mapped the sea

Ocean Exploration

Ocean explorer - best job ever

Unit 2 Marine Biology

Ocean Plants

As a marine biologist, I’d avoid most of the information for kids, online, regarding ocean plants – this is because it’s either incorrect or simplified to a level of being incorrect. To put it simply but still correctly, there’s true-plants (the seagrass) and plant-like organisms (seaweeds and phytoplankton) with multiple seaweed groups (red, brown and green). It’s easy to pass on common misconceptions when teaching specialised subjects. It’s just very challenging to teach. I would recommend grabbing some ID cards, if you can go to a museum, aquarium or local beach then great, and doing some basic ID activities like treasure hunts.

Ocean Animals

Exploring the Ocean play list by Free School

I love Sam, from Nat Geo Kids, video's. There are quite a few playlists at Nat Geo Kids, including their

Shark Week

Ocean Day

Scuba Sam’s World

and What Sam Sees

Lifecycles by Ocean Life Education – one of several videos for primary school-aged kids, focusing on curriculum topics, which are available on their channel

Ocean Ecosystems

Biomes and Ecosystems by Learn Bright

Ocean Habitats by Ocean Life Education

A food chain compilation video by Crash Course Kids

Helps explain the layers of the oceans

This video has a bit more detail about reefs than the workbook, may be better for slightly older kids

More of Sam from Nat Geo Kids videos – here she checks out a coral reef at night. I'd also recommend checking out the playlists above in the Ocean Animals section, they could be worth watching – especially for inspiration for colouring and drawing underwater habitats or starting a new project.

Unit 3 People and the Ocean

The Earth is our Home

Visiting the beach by Tom Booth, read allowed by ABC Read to me

Ocean Conservation

A Little cheesy, but a fun way to introduce litter and the oceans, is this ‘Save the Ocean’ animated video by Bethany Stahl

Ocean History

Oldie but Goldie – Seaside Holiday, finding out what it was like to visit the seaside 100 years ago. A few seconds of sound quality issues at the beginning but seems ok for the rest of the video. There are a few episodes of these around (and if you look closely you might recognize one of the actors!).

Captain James Cook by ABC Australia, there’s a playlist with some more BTN videos on the topic here.

Unit 4: Prehistoric Oceans

Learn Bright Fossils for Kids

I can’t believe how dated this looks now – I thought it was so good at the time!!! But it still gets the point across. Part of a wider playlist on walking with dinosaurs on the BBC Kids YouTube channel.
